Google Analytics
What is Google Analytics?
Google Analytics is a free web analytics service offered by Google that helps you understand how people use your website. You can use Google Analytics to measure your online performance, track user behaviour, and optimize your site to meet your goals.
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is automatically integrated on your Sky Website as part of the setup process. Once you have access to it, you can view various reports that show you how your users interact with your site. For example, you can see how many users visit your site, where they come from, what pages they view, how long they stay, what actions they take, and more. You can also customize your reports, set up goals, create segments, and use other features to get deeper insights into your data.
Your site is also setup to only gather data into Google Analytics from users who have consented to Google's cookies. This may mean that the total number of visitors that you see in Google Analytics is less than the actual number of visitors on your site.
If you don't already have access to Google Analytics, contact the Sky Websites team who can get you setup: DL-Sky-Websites-Developers@sky.uk
How to access Google Analytics
Once you've got an account, navigate to https://analytics.google.com/analytics/web/ to access your Google Analytics reports.
If you have access to reports from more than one site, there is a drop-down menu at the top which allows you to switch between your different Accounts and Properties. Generally each individual site is an 'Account' and there maybe multiple 'Properties' within that Account for your Production and Test environments.
How to use Google Analytics
Home Page
Google Analytics comes already preset with several reports. From the Home page of your Account you can see the number of users over the last 90 days, which you can adjust to a different timeframe using the drop-down at the bottom of the graph. On the right-hand side is a real-time snapshot of users that have been on your site in the last 30 minutes. Click 'View real time' to view a map of the world showing where those users are located, and an overview of what Pages those users have been accessing.
Reports Page
From the Menu on the left-hand side, select 'Reports' to view the suite of reports that have been set up for your Account. Any custom reports that you create will appear in here, but there are also several pre-built reports that you can access.
The Reports Snapshot will show a general overview of the key metrics for the site, such as the number of visitors, which countries they are located in, and the most popular pages on the site. The default view is for the last 28 days, and you can use the drop-down menu at the top-right of the screen to change the time-frame.
On the left-hand menu there are several sections with more detailed reports that you can explore, such as the Demographic details of your users, the Pages they're visiting, and the Tech they're using (e.g. device type, screen size).
